Yayoi Kusama 1929- Japanese Contemporary Artist
Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese contemporary artist who works primarily in sculpture and installation, but is also active in painting, performance, film, fashion, poetry, fiction, and other arts. Her work is based in conceptual art, and shows some attributes of feminism, minimalism, surrealism, Art Brut, pop art, and abstract impressionism. Her work is infused with autobiographical, psychological and sexual content. One of her most prominent motifs include the vast fields of polka dots, or “infinity nets” as she calls them. These were taken directly from her hallucinations she began to experience as early as 10 years of age. Her art became her escape from her family and her own mind when she began to have hallucinations. In 1977, she checked herself into Seiwa Hospital for the Mentally Ill, where she eventually took up permanent residence.
